Margate memories:Invisible cities

In the novel “Invisible City”, a fictional conversation between the Venetian explorer Marco Polo and the aged Mongolian Khan Kublai Khan. The book played an important role in constructing urban discourse and urban form. The simulation technology in the virtual field provides us with an opportunity to rethink the experience of space, society and culture. This type of technology also provides opportunities for us to contact with future cities, and provides more possibilities for shaping the built environment of the 21st century.

After that, I started to drew some sketch about Margate.

The city appears to you as a whole where no desire is lost and of which you are a part, and since it enjoys everything you do not enjoy, you can do nothing but inhabit this desire and be content. Such is the power, sometimes called malignant, sometimes benign, that Anastasia, the treacherous city, possesses; if for eight hours a day you work as a cutter of agate, onyx, chrysoprase, your labor which gives form to desire takes from desire its form, and you believe you are enjoying Anastasia wholly when you are only its slave.

Express Emotions

Barragan is a representative of emotional intervention in architectural art creation. He said in his speech after winning the Pritzker Prize: “Now there are some things and problems that Zhang Shuhong in the field of architecture makes me uneasy. Many books about architecture have changed today. Some of the basic vocabulary concepts that are deeply in my technique, such as: beauty, peace, privacy, fascination, inspiration, etc. Although these words are not reflected in my works, they are always a compass on my way of creation. “In the architectural creation ideas proposed by Barragan, we saw its radical and innovative side, and tried hard to build a harmonious bridge between emotion and architecture. In his speech, we can feel his pursuit of architectural spirit. , Ah tried to create a rich space and environment with his rich emotions and is to bring people more life and tension in the building, poetic to give the architectural expression of emotion.

Short Film

Artistic treatment

The project focuses on the past, present and the future of the margate pier jetty which was first opened in 1855 and completed in 1875. An octagonal pier head and pavilion was added to the jetty. Later in 1978, the Margate jetty was destroyed by the storm in 1978 causing serve flooding and damage to the east coast of Kent.

The design will tell a history of the jetty and explore future development of the Margate city towards the pier jetty. Most of the Margate city history has been in relationship with seas and seaport back in the day.

When people observe and feel outside things, it can be said that the fixed point of view can also be multi-view, multi-angle; it can be still and continuous, or it can be sports and jumping; it can be short or long; There is taste, not only a sense of depth, but also a three-dimensional sense. In order to cater to the law of people’s perception of external things, architects should organically increase the “lenses” of different scenes, angles and lengths. In addition to normal transmission and reception, they can also use materials such as deformation, exaggeration, symbolism and abstraction, virtuality, etc. Technology performs special processing.

<Vincent Van Gogh>

“What do most people think of me as? Nobody? A weirdo? A pain in the neck?

A person who has no social status now and will never have one? A word is the most common among thousands of common people.

Well, even if these are absolutely true.Giving me the chance, I’m going to show you through my work. Nobody like me. What was in his heart? This is to you forever — Van Gogh.”

Are most people like me

Always think that this is the self

But in some moments by something or someone

I don’t know who I am

The paints that once painted themselves

Sometimes it’s more than just paint

It communicates your mood

It doesn’t represent the true self

He showed the world an irreplaceable and unsurpassable power

Many people worshiped, watched and sighed with longing

But for him

Why not spend time in each tossing and turning self contradiction

Is that something he wants to enjoy

Even the endless worship of posterity

Was he sure of himself

Does he get the understanding of the people he CARES about?

<In the moon for love>

Express oneself through the lens, carry on the film “writing”.The sound of the film is organically combined with the picture with appropriate camera language, and the artistic features of the film are presented with shooting techniques.

<Chungking express>

the camera moves quickly or slowly to create a shaky effect.The heroine, n a bizarre costume, appears in a shaky scene in a narrow alley, surrounded by watchful eyes.

The camera lens that shakes will contemporary urbanite restlessness is agitated the mood was shown come out.

In the space scene of in the mood for love, the characters are placed in such a closed and narrow space, and their inner sense of oppression is externalized through the ingenious arrangement of the space scene.

Script

I thought that depression was a pain that I couldn’t empathize with, and when I tried to interpret a work with negative and pessimistic themes, maybe it was because I felt the positive force behind the emotion.

When I appreciate works of art or look at things, I am always attracted by some negative emotions. He can give people to do things that are beyond the reach of ordinary people and understand the truth that ordinary people cannot understand.

Several friends told me that because she felt worthless at work and wanted to escape, she did not know how to choose the next journey.Also has because of the unexpected, consecutive six months every night to drink to sleep.People around you don’t know how to comfort them, from saying “it’s going to be okay” to “how come you’re still struggling with this after all this time”.

When thinking about the script, I watched some films of depression to let myself get deep into it and feel daily with their thoughts.

His play is about the hero (me) and his family grew up in a big city, I used to dream of this city, infinite beautiful.I thought my happy life was here.But I don’t know when it started, the surroundings began to be different.Work, study, love, are piled up here, and then lost.

Lonely feeling, a soul was pulling away, only the body, very empty, you every day like a machine supply what body need and ability, but the whole people feel like the world without meaning again, all things seem to know that I always engraved on asking myself, why does man alive, but it seems I always can’t find the answer.

I don’t want to hear some truth from my friends, but I have to do it. However, I feel uncomfortable for an hour or two in the process of learning.

As a native of Margate, he grew up listening to the older generation tell him about the bustling history of his hometown, so he decided to look for hope there.

But when he arrived, he found the scene was different from what they had described.

The old town and Cecil Square enjoyed The role of The heart in different times due to many wars, suffered losses in The name of new development, became economically vulnerable, and suffered a series of social problems.

Heavy reliance on declining industries, population decline…I have found that time can destroy beautiful things.For half a year, I have been trying to save myself, to find, to reach my heart of the sun.I, the dock and the beach are dead.Nothing to remember…

I just left a scar, itchy to cut it off, but it would bleed.One thousand pieces of scab want to dig, now into a scar how to dig down.I could hardly breathe, but I thought of that place, that imaginary beach.I had a dream.

I heard the sound of the waves, the wind, the sound of seagulls flying, I found myself, like the sea crashed the ship, the most important thing is to save themselves.

Because I don’t know when life will come to an abrupt end, but I at least found after things feel beautiful, like the ripples after the ship.

There are not so many known things in the dream, there is no way to predict what will happen next, just let it go, let it go.

I woke up after that moment as usual, but I began to hope that the beach I had been waiting for, from dawn to dusk, would come alive again, even briefly.

<Melancholia>

The film tells a melancholy disaster story with great grace. Cause she melancholy is a mysterious asteroid is rapidly approaching the earth, so imaginative film only director lars von trier shot out. The picture is as beautiful as oil painting, which forms a sharp contrast with the heroine who lives in a dark world of her own. It expresses the helplessness and despair of the depressed patients through artistic expression, which is incompatible with the surrounding environment.

The feeling of hypochondria is often not perceived by outsiders, and the film through the combination of imagination and reality to let the audience feel the heroine’s mental disorder and bondage.

During the movie, you will feel depressed and manic, but after watching the movie, you will also feel release and understanding.

Sometimes, we feel that depression is far away from us. In fact, depression is a common mood disorder, can be caused by a variety of reasons.

<Shinning>

The shining attraction is the artistic charm that great movies offer. How kubrick uses some of the deranged details to reach the audience’s subconscious, the previously dissonant effect of terror, those details are very interesting to ponder.

For example, when the movie shows Wendy and Danny at home, Danny’s door is covered with cartoon decals. The dwarf doppy decal is the most prominent one.

When the doctor came in after Danny fainted, the Doppy on the door disappeared. Explanation reader analysis thinks, this is because the red liquid that Danny encounters the hotel elevator to surge to come, the manifestation of evil power obscured Danny original childlike innocence.

From the very beginning, the director used the disorder of space to interfere with the judgment of the audience, so that the audience could have a latent sense of oppression and discomfort. His great strength lies in that he creates this kind of unreal sense with tasks and photographic scheduling in the same continuous lens, and expresses the hidden surreal space with realistic techniques.

But even with montage, curico was able to shift the viewer’s attention in the continuity of the motion logic, using different visual layers and manipulating the effects. When dick shows Wendy and Danny around the cold house, the space before entering and after leaving completely changes. He’s creating space confusion.

The Story of Margate

In the study of artistic expression, I use videos and poetic stories to describe.The location we choose is Margaret’s Turner Contemporary.

And I searched some histories of Margate and found some interseting information about it.It is said that the north of Margate is the river and the south of Margate is the hill.

At the beginning of development, Margate was always full of energy, just like a teenager. They are always so energetic, always so positive forward, as if they will never be depressed.

The pier was built in 1855 and destroyed by the storm in 1968. Just as the Victorian wharf was destroyed, Margate’s economy began to decline in the 1960s. The mix combusted 56 years ago on the Bank Holiday weekend of May 18 and 19 when thousands of Mods and Rockers flocked to Brighton, Margate, Clacton, Southend and Hastings.

At present, reviving the old town as a distintive arts and cultural quarter, and using the intimate scale of histortic buildings as an attration for new businesses, could once again allow the heart of the Margate.

The future of margate can be explained by understanding the past and present. The future of Margate is represented through an space for architectural design. The future envisioned Margate pier is designed and a story of the future is told. This direction of research was chosen suitable to my architecture design skills.

After that, our group decided to use margate story to do the project and it seperated into 3 parts .
